How this calculator works

Pipe volume treats the pipe as a simple cylinder using its inside diameter — useful for estimating how much water sits in a line before a flush, drain-down, or system fill. Drain slope follows the standard plumbing-code minimum fall: 1/4" per foot for drain pipe 3" or smaller, and 1/8" per foot for larger pipe, so gravity keeps waste moving without solids settling out.

Why does drain slope matter so much?

Too little slope and solids can settle and clog the line; too much slope and water can outrun solids, leaving them behind ("self-siphoning"). Standard code minimums are chosen to keep flow velocity consistent.

Does inside diameter really equal nominal pipe size?

Not exactly — actual inside diameter varies slightly by pipe material and schedule (PVC, copper, PEX all differ a little). For planning purposes nominal size is a reasonable estimate; for precise volume work, use the manufacturer's actual ID.
