How this calculator works

Joist count (base) = ceil( (Span (ft) × 12) ÷ On-center spacing (in) ) + 1 Total joists = Joist count (base) + Doubled joists Board feet per joist = (2 × Nominal width (in) × Joist length (ft)) ÷ 12 Total board feet = Board feet per joist × Total joists × (1 + Waste %)

This uses the same on-center layout math as framing a wall with studs — joists space out along the run the same way. Doubled joists account for the extra framing member typically run alongside a joist that falls under a parallel partition wall, or on either side of a floor/ceiling opening (stairwell, chimney chase, HVAC chase). Rim/band joists run perpendicular around the perimeter and aren't included in this count — figure those separately using the room's other dimension.

Why doesn't this tell me what size joist I need?

Safe joist span depends on wood species, grade, spacing, and the load the floor or ceiling needs to carry — factors that come from your local building code's span tables or an engineer's calculation, not a simple formula. Getting this wrong is a structural safety issue, not just a material-ordering one, so it's intentionally out of scope for this tool.

Floor vs. ceiling joists — why two separate tabs if the math is the same?

The layout math (count from span and spacing) is identical, but the two serve very different structural roles — floor joists carry live load (people, furniture) while ceiling joists typically carry only the ceiling finish and light attic storage. Keeping them separate avoids mixing up which span table applies to which.

Do I need to add extra length for bearing?

Yes — joists typically need at least 1.5" of bearing at each end (more for engineered lumber), so the length you order is often a few inches longer than the clear span between supports. Confirm your exact bearing requirement before ordering.
